Meet Tom Aizenberg
I'm Tom - a wedding photographer who loves movies, stories and finding the moments in life that become tomorrow's nostalgic images. I'm based in London, but work all over the country (and elsewhere). I live with my wife and our toddler daughter, so every day is a school day (for me). It's changed my outlook on life, and made me conscious of how quickly everything can change. I love using this perspective and knowledge to be better at my job. One of my favourite things is learning about my passions, and I love trying to develop my craft, as well as my sense of creativity and curiosity about the world.
What do you love about weddings?
Weddings are a kind of tinderbox for emotions - the ceremony puts everyone in this place where the emotions are just below the surface, and as a photographer, it gives me the opportunity to look for the moments where the emotion surfaces for the rest of the day. There's a good mix of predictable things that happen (like the ceremony), as well as unstructured time, which gives different challenges, and I love the challenge of trying to also take natural portraits that suit the personality of the couple.
What is your favourite part of a wedding to capture?
I love the drinks reception - the emotion of the ceremony is very much still there, everyone tends to be in a good mood, and because it's usually a good stretch of time where people are just interacting with each other, and greeting the couple, there are usually lots of opportunities to tell different stories.
How would you describe your style?
Nostalgic documentary, with a hint of fine art. I like to think that cinema informs my style - as that has always been an obsession of mine. I also aim to have a slightly stylised element to my images, without taking them too far from reality.
What one piece of advice would you give to a couple planning their wedding?
Don't sweat the small stuff. It can be so easy to disappear into a rabbit warren of obsessing about the small details (like what shape of plates to have, for example) when the true magic of having all your favourite people under one roof is the best thing about the day. You'll take a lot of the stress out of planning, and find yourself more carefree and relaxed on the day as well.
What areas do you cover and are you happy to travel?
I predominantly cover London and Surrey, but I work in Sussex, Kent and Hampshire quite a lot. I've also worked in northern England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Italy and Spain, so I really go wherever my clients take me. I can't think of many places I would say no to, purely on location, as I find new places inspiring.
